HERROLDS IN
GERMANY
There is a
direct trace from the Herrolds of today to Jacob Hörold born in 1555
in Marbach, Germany. Jacob (Jakob) was married to Margaretha
(?). Their son, Cornelius Hörold (1586-1660),
married Maria Barth (1590- ) and their son was Georg Hörold
(1624-1684).
Georg Christoph Hörold is the first Herrold to appear in the 1634-1709
(Martinskirche) Lutheran
Church book at Steinheim an der Murr (b), Wüerttemberg, Germany in 1644,
with his marriage to Anna Madlena (Magdalena) Mueller (1620-1680). This first church record
book, the Martinskirche,
contains 37 entries of Hörolds and the record book that followed it (1710-1762) contains 20
entries up to 1737. It is believed Georg lived
south of Steinheim in the Hagnach area. Georg and Anna's
son was Hans Michel Herold (1663-1693), who married Margaretha
Klein (1667- ), and their son was George Christoph Herrold, Sr.
(1688-1749), who married Maria Catherina Scheelkopf (1692-
).
A German Coat-of-Arms (Merchant) was issued for
Christoph Heroldt by purchase in 1662 of an Estate in Bunzlau. The
design of the Coat-of-Arms uses the
fleur-de-lis (Lily) and it is argued by some that this is evidence of the
Herrold family's French and royal heritage. However, this French
Connection is disputed by some Herrold Historians. Although the
credibility of the Herrold's French Connection is in dispute, it is certain that
by the mid 1600s, the Hörolds
were settled in Germany for at least a number of years.
In 1743, the
George Christoph Hörold, Sr. (1688-1749) family lived in the front half
of 24 Markstrasse in Steinheim an der Murr, Wüerttemberg, Germany (this
house is depicted as the background of our Home page). Steinheim was
the place of his ancestors dating back as
the oldest Hörold entry in the 1634-1709 Lutheran Church record book
in Steinheim.
